The rubber industry, a critical component of the global economy, faces increasing pressure to adopt sustainable practices. While natural rubber comes from trees, synthetic rubber is produced from petrochemical-based monomers. The production of synthetic rubber is energy-intensive and has environmental concerns related to its dependence on fossil fuels. However, the industry is evolving towards more sustainable practices in synthetic rubber production.

One key development is the research into bio-based synthetic rubber, which uses renewable resources like plant-based oils or biopolymers instead of traditional petrochemical sources. This shift reduces the carbon footprint of synthetic rubber production and helps decrease dependence on non-renewable resources.

Innovations such as biodegradable rubber and plant-based alternatives are gaining traction in research and development. These materials, once widely commercialized, could offer significant environmental benefits by reducing reliance on fossil fuels and reducing waste.

In addition, many companies are setting ambitious sustainability targets, including carbon neutrality and zero deforestation commitments, to reduce their environmental impact.
